Highpoints in the Area

List here some places with stellar views.

We're investigating locations where we can mount radio, wireless, free-space optical and other network equipment at a high-point - a rooftop, hilltop, treetops or other structures with legal and negotiable access.

Our building's roof is disqualified, as we presently have no access to, and no permission to access, the roof of our building. (Bummer.)

SODO

Beacon Hill Bluffs

Corner of Beacon Av S & 11th Ave S View of SODO from the bluff View of Seattle's skyline from the street

There is a trailhead entrance that goes in two directions down this bluff, one gently alongside it, and one more steeply down it.

Potential benefits

  • Excellent view of the SODO area, I-90, I-5 going south out of Seattle.
  • Good view of downtown Seattle high-rises, in the event a repeater is reachable.
  • Very close to Re-PC, which often has folks with mesh radio hardware in their cars visiting.
  • Looks like it's not on private property.
  • Thick evergreen vegetation makes it easier to hide a small device and solar power harvesting nearby, especially if disguised.
  • Nearby encampment downhill of it likely has an interest in cheap radio.

Potential risks

  • Theft
    • Down the road, the area of SODO around the Goodwill has a reputation of attracting folks under hardship.
    • Nearby encampment downhill of it definitely has an interest in free radios.
  • Landslide
    • It's upon a bluffside that looks like it may have encountered slides in the past (which may have taken out 11th Avenue, hence the barricades).
  • Weather
    • Being on a bluffside, high wind and steep geography could bring down the tree or tower we mount such hardware onto.
