The Ballou Wright Building

**This is an old revision of the document!**

The Ballou Wright Building

The Ballou Wright Building is the commercial building that dma.space resides in. If you take the stairs, please go 2 floors up, since the Mezzanine sits between ours and the ground floor.

We have no access to the roof, Mezzanine, Basement, or Utility Space. If access is needed to these, please reach a Board Member to contact the Landlord. In case of an emergency, escalate to Emergency Procedures.

The Building may have CCTV and security monitoring in common spaces.

Do be respectful of our neighbors; keep noise levels low, don't stomp around, don't leave trash or items outside the Space, and don't snoop around the building where you're not supposed to.

Subpages

Entrance

The building entrance is the street-facing entry on 12th Ave. You may find our entrance to the left of Overcast Coffee.

The building is guarded by the ButterflyMX system.

Ringing ButterflyMX

On the ButterflyMX system near the door, you'll be able to find our name on the contact list and ring us. Please only do this if necessary, meaning you don't see any other means of entering or contacting us.

Entering as a Member

If you're a member and have not done Member Onboarding, please do so first! You may refer to the Onboarding Playbook as well.

Once you're onboarded, you should have an IdP account capable of accessing internal pages. Then, continue to Internal/Accessing the Space.

History

Constructed in 1917, this building served as the headquarters for Oscar Ballou and Charles Wright's automotive parts enterprise.

Our current property owners, Hunters Capital, acquired the building in 2008-2010 and renovated it in 2012. They have a page on this building on their website.

This site was used as the set for the reality TV show “The Real World” in 2016. You may see it listed on Google Maps as “'Real World: Seattle' (2016) house.”

Our neighbors include tech and creative businesses alike, as well as other firms and offices. Please be mindful of them and keep noise levels low when in common spaces, especially during working hours.

Floors

Main Stairwell

This is the Building's front stairway, next to the elevator.

These stairs connect all the major floors, and the Mezzanine, which is not the second floor, where we are.

First Floor

This is the ground floor of the Building.

This is where the Lobby resides, as well as the Building Entrance.

Mezzanine

This is unexplored territory, another tenant's rented space in the Building, and is off-limits.

This is the second landing on the stairs, and the “M” button and second level on the elevator; not to be confused with the proper second floor, which is one flight up.

Far future plans to occupy the Mezzanine have been a pipe-dream amongst spacegoers and members for some time now.

No further information is required at this time.

Second Floor

This is the floor on which dma.space resides.

It is on the third flight of stairs (past the Mezzanine, but it is considered the second level proper, as the lobby beneath the Mezzanine is a half-height storey.

As well as dma.space itself, you will find bathrooms, the “In Case of Robot Uprising” switch, a State Farm Insurance office, and several other presumably good neighbors.

Third Floor

This is the third floor, or the fourth flight of stairs, counting the Mezzanine.

Supposedly, its bathrooms have showers.

Not much else is known about this unexplored realm. Please fill in further details as they are discovered.

Utility Stairwell

Note: READ THIS EXTREMELY CAREFULLY

The ONLY legitimate reasons you would need to access the Utility Stairwell, is either in case of emergency, or to take out the trash.

DO NOT ENTER the Utility Stairwell otherwise.

Do not go out there to have a smoke, do not use it as a shortcut/way out, especially do not use it for performing other illicit acts.

The Building may have CCTV and security monitoring in common spaces including the Utility Staircase. Don't embarrass yourself; please don't embarrass us.

You might be locked out in the stairway once you go out the Utility Stairwell door.

Be extremely careful when navigating throughout the building, and do NOT enter places you're not supposed to.

If you're doing this at night or in the dark, make sure you carry your phone in case of emergency or for when you need a flashlight.

If you're uncertain or this is your first time doing this, please reach out to a member at the space who have done this before and ask them to accompany you.

This is at the back of the building.

Access to this stairwell is available from the second and third floors.

Access to the Utility Space, Roof and Rear Alley (Trash) are available from this stairwell.

Only use this for access to the Rear Alley for trash drop-off.

See the trash procedures for more information.

If you plan to re-enter through this door, hold it open.

Otherwise, ensure this door is closed at all times.

Basement

Off-limits. No access from stairs, door is locked from utility staircase and elevator access requires Key Card.

Roof Area

The roof of the building is strictly off-limits, and no access is provided to the roof. Do not attempt to access the roof.

We have requested, and been denied, either access to the roof, or professional placement of equipment upon the roof.

We will not continue to press the matter with our landlord.

High-altitude access to nearby buildings and locations is being investigated for placement of radio, free-space optical and wireless network equipment.
