The Ballou Wright Building

**This is an old revision of the document!**

The Ballou Wright Building

The Ballou Wright Building is the commercial building that dma.space resides in. If you take the stairs, please go 2 floors up to skip the mezzanine and the second floor.

In case of an emergency, refer to Emergency Procedures.

The Building may have CCTV and security monitoring in common spaces.

Be respectful of our neighbors; keep noise levels low, don't stomp around, don't leave trash or items outside the Space, and don't snoop around the building where you're not supposed to.

Subpages

Entrance

The building entrance is the street-facing entry on 12th Ave. You may find our entrance to the left of Overcast Coffee.

The building is guarded by the ButterflyMX system.

Ringing ButterflyMX

On the ButterflyMX system near the door, you'll be able to find our name on the contact list and ring us. Please only do this if necessary, meaning you don't see any other means of entering or contacting us.

Entering as a Member

If you're a member and have not done Member Onboarding, please do so first! You may refer to the Onboarding Playbook as well.

Once you're onboarded, you should have an IdP account capable of accessing internal pages. Then, continue to Internal/Accessing the Space.

History

Constructed in 1917, this building served as the headquarters for Oscar Ballou and Charles Wright's automotive parts enterprise.

Our current property owners, Hunters Capital, acquired the building in 2008-2010 and renovated it in 2012. They have a page on this building on their website.

This site was used as the set for the reality TV show “The Real World” in 2016. You may see it listed on Google Maps as “'Real World: Seattle' (2016) house.”

Our neighbors include tech and creative businesses alike, as well as other firms and offices. Please be mindful of them and keep noise levels low when in common spaces, especially during working hours.

Floors

Please don't try to access any units or rooms that are not ours. Be mindful when you walk the hallways and don't scare off our neighbors (other tenants).

Front Stairwell

You can find this stairway next to the elevator. There is a bike mounting area right next to it as well.

First Floor

Elevator button: 1

This is the ground floor of the Building.

This is where the lobby, as well as the building entrance.

Mezzanine

Elevator button: M

This floor is off-limits, since it belongs to other tenants. Access to this floor is gated by the badge reader inside the elevator and at the front stairwell.

This is the second landing on the stairs and the “M” button on the elevator. It is not to be confused with the actual second floor, which is still one extra floor up.

Future plans to occupy the Mezzanine have been a pipe-dream among spacegoers and members for some time now.

Second Floor

Elevator button: 2

We are on this floor!

It is on the third flight of stairs (past the Mezzanine, but it is considered the second level proper, as the lobby beneath the Mezzanine is a half-height story.

Aside from us, you'll find the second-floor bathrooms, the “In Case of Robot Uprising” switch, a State Farm Insurance office, and several other neighbors.

Third Floor

Elevator button: 3

This is the official third floor of the building. It is on the fourth flight of stairs counting the mezzanine.

There should be an extra bathroom with a shower on this floor. See Bathrooms for more information.

Rear Stairwell

Note: READ THIS EXTREMELY CAREFULLY

The only legitimate reasons you would need to access the Rear Stairwell is either in case of emergency or to take out the trash. Do not enter the stairwell otherwise.

Do not go there to have a smoke, do not use it as a shortcut/way out, especially do not use it for performing other illicit acts.

If you need to go there, read this section in full. Skipping any part of it may cause you to be locked out of the space.

The rear stairwell is located at the back of the building hallways. Access to this stairwell is available from the second and third floors.

The door leading to the stairway from the second floor (unclear about third) is extremely precarious: there is a wooden block on the floor that you need to move so that it blocks the door from shutting fully. Keep this in mind so you don't lock yourself (or others) out.

If you're doing this at night or in the dark, make sure you carry your phone in case of emergency or for when you need a flashlight. The stairwell is very dark at night, and the light switch is very hard to find.

If you're uncertain or this is your first time doing this, please reach out to a member at the space who have done this before and ask them to accompany you.

Basement

The basement is off-limit. Please do not attempt to access it.

Roof Area

The roof of the building is off-limits, and no access is provided to the roof. Do not attempt to access the roof.

We have requested and been denied by our landlord both access to the roof and professional placement of equipment on the roof. We will not continue to press the matter with our landlord.
